Rethinking Research Ethics in the Age of AI

Prof. Kostas Karpouzis
National Technical University of Athens, Greece

Abstract: AI is reshaping research across disciplines, but its integration raises ethical challenges that technical communities can’t ignore. This talk examines how AI complicates core principles like informed consent, transparency, and accountability—both as a research subject and as a methodological tool. From biased models and opaque systems to the use of AI in writing and peer review, traditional review mechanisms and legal frameworks like GDPR often fall short. I’ll outline key issues facing CS researchers, including data governance, dual-use risks, and authorship questions, and argue for ethics-aware design practices and interdisciplinary collaboration as essential components of responsible AI research.

Brief Biography of the Speaker: Dr Kostas Karpouzis is an assistant professor at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture at Panteion University. His research deals with algorithms that make computer systems more adaptive to how people interact with them and how digital games and gamification, as cultural artifacts, can be used to teach conventional and social skills. At the same time, he explores the ethical and social values embedded in and influenced by AI systems. He has given three talks at TEDx events and his TED-Ed video "Can machines read your emotions?" has been viewed over 670,000 times and translated into 26 languages.
